I wish they spent as much time and effort on writing the plot and the script as the did on the cinematography and set design. The acting was robust no doubt, but I would expect a film of this caliber with a 100M budget to hold at least the slightest bit of historical accuracy or realistic screenplay. This film made Hacksaw Ridge look like a History Channel documentary and The fact that the hollywood foreign press gave 1917 a Golden Global for best drama just proves Ricky Gervais right. Netflix has already won. They made a mockery out of The Great War.

One of the best movies I have ever seen. The cinematography is just amazing. Lets just also appreciate the fact that in an age of lazy cut and paste cgi these guys still took the time to build proper sets and do proper location shooting. I like this movie. So, where are the things we 'missed. 1:50 gives me chills. Really can't beleive this got the oscar for best visual effects. I didn't see any. If the trenches and some fire are, ok. The film is very boring, slow and ridiculous at times where the german soldier can't hit the lad from 10 metres. Almost all other famous war movies are better. Can't beleive this rating.

Visually the film looks great with a lot of detail going into making the scenes look authentic and realistic. The camera work is impressive through these settings.
Although set in the trenches,I wouldn't say this is a high intensity action film. There are periods of action, but not as intense as I've seen in other war films.
It does have a dejavu of Saving Private Ryan. but this doesn't detract from what is an excellent film.
